Bellringing

You can hear the bells of St. Mary’s being rung regularly on Sundays before the morning service and on Monday nights at our practice evening.  We also ring for other special occasions, for example the King’s Coronation, at Christmas and New Year and for some weddings. Five of our bells date back to the 17th Century, hence the name of the nearby 5 Bells Public House.  The other 3 lighter bell were added in the 1950s to make a beautifully sounding octave.

St. Mary’s bellringers are a friendly group who enjoy ringing together.  Bellringing is a fascinating traditional hobby and is open to all whatever your age.  You don’t need to be musical or attend church.  It is a hobby that will exercise your body and stimulate your brain.

If you are interested in finding out more and having a go feel free to pop in on a practice night on Mondays 7.30 – 9.00pm.  Individual bell handling sessions are held at St. James’ Church in Stretham on Saturday mornings.  Once you can handle a bell independently you can join us regularly on a Monday and the fun really begins.  You can find out more about learning to bellring here Learn to ring - bellringing.org
