Online church questionnaires

A update from the Vicar, Eleanor Williams, about re-opening our buildings

Although the new Government Guidelines allow churches to open, for individual private prayer, we are not yet ready to be opening either St Mary's or St Etheldreda's. However, we are actively working towards limited opening as soon as we are able to meet the stringent guidelines. Some of the details of how this can be done safely and in line with social distancing guidelines have yet to be clarified. We have started our risk assessment and planning to make sure that, when we re-open our buildings, we have done everything we can to keep people safe. This all takes time, and we will keep you posted on any decisions made, including the anticipated timescales.

Opening for private prayer is just the first step, but it will clearly be some considerable time before we are in a position to have church services as we know them. These months of pandemic and lockdown have been a time of great anxiety and pain for many people, and it is appropriate for us to acknowledge a deep sense of loss.

But while we’ve missed meeting together and being in our church buildings, new possibilities have been opened up. We have been encouraged as we have learned to engage in new ways via Facebook and Zoom, and new people have joined us in worship. This leads us to thinking more widely about the future. As we move forwards, we’re looking at a period of time where there is a hybrid pattern of worship services and other gatherings being held partly online and partly in person. Can you help us think about how we might do that better? How is the online experience working and what changes might we make in this interim period, and also when the church buildings are fully open again?

Please help us by completing one of our questionnaires: a version for those who are existing members of our congregations and groups, and a version for those who have recently joined us. If you would rather have a conversation than complete a form, please contact Eleanor. We are praying for you, in these challenging times, and please do pray for us, as we seek to discern the best ways to move forwards.

God bless you
